Breast carcinoma is one of the most common malignancy in women, with approximately 180,000 new cases of invasive cancer occurring each year in the United States. The incidence of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), which represents the immediate preinvasive stage of breast carcinoma, is increasing each year.

Clarient’s mission is to improve the lives of those affected by cancer by bringing clarity to a complex disease. More specifically, we have dedicated our efforts to collaborative relationships that provide you – the community pathologist – with the latest information and assays that translate into better patient care.

Over the last several years, it has been well demonstrated that breast cancer is a clinically heterogeneous disease. For the most part, the following have all played a key role in working up breast cancer cases:

  • Histological type
  • Grade
  • Tumor size
  • Lymph node involvement

Standard makers have also played a key role in providing prognostic and predictive information.

  • ER
  • PR
  • HER2
  • Ki-67

All this information put together plays a role in influencing our patient’s prognosis and the probability of response to therapies available in the marketplace. The need for using existing histological classifications as well as protein and molecular markers to fully capture the wide variety of the clinical course taken by our patients is an inevitable approach.
